VRChat puts you in rooms with people from all over the world, and sooner or later you meet someone you'd love to talk to but can't understand. This guide covers what works without any tools, the main translation options and their trade-offs, and how to get live subtitles and a translated voice on your PC.
Trannel runs on Windows PCs. Send yourself the link to download it later on your PC – or join our Discord in the meantime.

Plenty of friendships in VRChat start without a shared language. A few habits go a long way:
These work, but they hit a limit quickly once a conversation gets longer than small talk.
When you want real conversations, you have roughly three choices:
Also check whether a tool sends your audio to a server. In voice chat you're recording other people too, so tools that process everything locally are the more privacy-friendly choice.
Trannel is a Windows 10/11 app that translates what your PC plays into subtitles in an overlay that stays on top of the game. For VRChat:
Automatic language detection helps in mixed lobbies where people switch languages. Trannel recognises and translates 20 languages, including Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai, Russian, Spanish and Portuguese.
Desktop vs. headset: the overlay is a window on your Windows desktop. In desktop mode you see it directly over VRChat. In a headset you won't see it unless you bring your desktop into VR with a desktop view tool for your VR platform.
Understanding is half the conversation. With the Voice feature, currently in beta, Trannel translates what you say into your microphone and speaks it with a natural voice into a virtual microphone.
Natural voices are available for 13 languages; for the others Trannel uses Windows voices. It's polite to tell people early on that you're using a translator, so a strange translation doesn't confuse them.
Recognition and translation run entirely on your PC. No audio or text is uploaded; Trannel only goes online for the license check, updates and the first model download. That matters in VRChat, where the voices you hear belong to other people.
You get 30 free minutes every week with all features and no account. If it becomes part of your VRChat nights, there are monthly, yearly and lifetime licenses.
Note on “Voice for Discord”: this feature is in beta. It may contain errors and its scope and behaviour may differ from a later version. It is only included in the version from trannelapp.com. Please test it with the free 30 minutes per week before you buy. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.
Not directly. The Trannel overlay is a window on your Windows desktop. In VRChat desktop mode it sits on top of the game; in a headset you need a tool that shows your desktop inside VR to see it.
Yes, if you select the virtual microphone set up by the installer option Voice for Discord (Beta) as your microphone in VRChat. They then hear the translated voice. The feature is in beta, so test it with a friend first.
No. Trannel only translates spoken audio. Text that appears only on screen, including chatbox messages and signs, is not read.
