How to get subtitles for a livestream that has none

Many Twitch and YouTube livestreams have no captions at all, and some that do only offer them in the streamer's language. You can still follow along: check the platform's own options first, then use a tool that turns the audio your PC plays into live subtitles, translated if needed.

Why so many livestreams have no subtitles

Captions on a live broadcast are not automatic everywhere. Whether a stream has them depends on the platform, the language being spoken and what the streamer has set up. Many streamers simply never turn captions on, or use a captioning add-on that only some viewers can see.

Even where automatic captions exist, they are usually in the original language only. If the streamer speaks Japanese, Korean or Portuguese and you do not, captions in that language do not help much. That is why viewers often need two things at once: transcription (turning speech into text) and translation.

Tips for getting readable live subtitles

How Trannel adds subtitles to any stream

Trannel is a Windows 10/11 app that translates whatever your PC plays into live subtitles. It works with any Twitch or YouTube stream because it does not depend on the platform: it listens to the sound and shows text in an overlay that stays on top of your browser or player.

Setting it up for a livestream

  1. Install Trannel and let it download the language model on first start.
  2. Open the stream in your browser and start playback.
  3. In Trannel, choose to listen to your browser only instead of all sound.
  4. Pick your target language; the spoken language can be detected automatically.
  5. Press F8 to show the overlay, drag it to a free spot and set a comfortable font size.
  6. Press F9 to make it click-through so you can keep chatting and using the player controls.

Trannel runs without a graphics card. With an NVIDIA or AMD GPU it is faster and can use the larger model. Choose between the quality levels Fast, Balanced and Best to match your PC.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I get subtitles for a stream the streamer has not captioned?

Yes. First check whether the platform offers a captions button for that stream. If not, a live subtitle app like Trannel can listen to the audio your PC plays and show subtitles in an overlay, regardless of the streamer's settings.

Does Trannel translate the stream into my language?

Yes, it recognizes and translates speech in 20 languages and can detect the spoken language automatically. Translations are AI-generated, so occasional mistakes are possible.

Is the stream audio sent to a server?

No. Trannel runs speech recognition and translation offline on your PC and does not upload audio or text. It only goes online for the license check, updates and the first model download.
