Short answer: it depends on the service, and you usually cannot verify it yourself. When a translator works in the cloud, your audio leaves your device and you rely on someone else's policies. Here is what can happen to that audio, how to judge a service, and how to avoid the question entirely by translating offline.

An online voice translator has to send your speech, or text made from it, to a remote server to process it. From that moment, privacy is no longer a technical guarantee but a matter of trust: the provider's privacy policy, its security, and the laws where its servers run.
Many services handle data responsibly. But "private" in the strict sense, meaning nobody else ever receives your words, is only possible when recognition and translation happen on your own device.
Exact practices differ between providers, but these are the stages your audio typically passes through:
None of this is automatically wrong, but every stage is a place where data can be retained, accessed or leaked.
If you cannot find clear answers, assume the data may be stored.
For ordering food abroad or translating a public video, the privacy risk of a reputable cloud service is usually acceptable. It becomes a real concern for:
For these cases, an offline translator that keeps everything on your device is the cleaner solution.
Trannel is a Windows 10/11 app that does speech recognition and translation entirely offline on your PC. No audio or text is uploaded. The app only goes online for the license check, updates and the first model download.
Honest limits: translations are AI-generated and can contain mistakes. Trannel translates only what is spoken, so text that appears only on screen is not read. And when you use the voice feature in Discord or a game, that platform still transmits your (translated) voice to the other players as usual; Trannel only keeps the translation step local.
Note on “Voice for Discord”: this feature is in beta. It may contain errors and its scope and behaviour may differ from a later version. It is only included in the version from trannelapp.com. Please test it with the free 30 minutes per week before you buy. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.
Only for the license check, updates and the first model download. Speech recognition and translation run on your PC, and no audio or text is uploaded.
Accuracy depends on the model and your hardware. Trannel offers Fast, Balanced and Best quality levels, and an NVIDIA or AMD graphics card allows the larger model. Like any AI translation, results can contain mistakes, so double-check anything important.
No. Trannel keeps the recognition and translation on your PC, but the voice chat platform itself still transmits what you say to other participants under its own policies. Trannel does not add any extra upload on top of that.
